Voice notes can now be converted to text on WhatsApp

When you are busy at the workplace or in a meeting, getting a voice note from a friend on WhatsApp can create quite a lot of problems and often puts you in a difficult situation. You want to know what the voice memo says, but can't play it in the middle of the meeting. Almost all of us have been in these situations.

But WhatsApp is trying to solve it. According to a recent report on WA Beta Info, WhatsApp will roll out a feature. This article talks about the upcoming feature.

This feature allows you to convert voice notes into text. This feature allows you to read their content without playing them out loud. The feature is being tested with a small group of beta users in some countries who have downloaded the latest WhatsApp beta for Android update from the Google Play Store.

Users with access to this feature can enable it for incoming and outgoing voice messages by downloading a language data package. This ensures that voice notes remain private as the transcription process takes place locally on the user's device. Currently, supported languages include English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Hindi.

More languages are likely to be added to this feature in the future. This feature will be very useful for the hearing impaired. Allows them to participate in conversations that include voice notes. It provides convenience by allowing users to quickly scan through transcriptions of voice messages instead of listening to them. And it makes the content easier to understand.

According to WA Beta Info, users will be asked to download approximately 150MB of additional app data. This feature will be enabled by default. But in some cases, users may need to enable it. According to screenshots shared by the publication, when the transcription feature is enabled, users may get a notification asking them to "Read voice messages with transcripts" indicating the availability of transcribed message content.

The report added that since the transcripts are generated on the device, no one else can listen to the voice notes or read the users' transcripts. So, it can be assumed that WhatsApp is also focusing on the privacy of its users while rolling out the new feature. The report added that the feature is currently in the testing phase and is only available to limited beta users. However, WhatsApp aims to roll out this feature to more users soon.
